Get Your motor Runnin'...

Here are a few examples of some of the ads I've put together for Harley Davidson of Yorkton, while in the employ of the Leader-Post. The "biker" toon was used quite frequently, usually with "seasonal" appointments - such as a Santa suit at Christmas - to great effect. The vintage-looking photo in the ad on the left is actually a composite that I made out of three other photos, then used various filters to achieve the antiquated look. I think it works!...

A Few Panels From a Storyboard.

Storyboards are good exercise. They need to be done quickly, and they generally don't require the same level of detail as most illustration work does. These involved a lot of composite images and adaptation of existing artwork, all thrown together in Photoshop. Some received extra attention, others cut corners. The average time per panel? @30 minutes.

Big Wheels Rollin'...

This was done for the Saskatchewan Trucking Association. The original illustration (top) had a little smoke action going on up top, but I soon discovered that diesel smoke is an issue that the organization doesn't want to draw attention to, so it was done away with on the final product (lower image.)

Ron's Book.

This is the cover art and a few select chapter illustrations that I created for Leader-Post humour columnist Ron Petrie's first book, "Running of the Buffalo." Ron is one of those fellas with a "putty face" - possessed of a wide range of facial expressions. he can (and certainly DID) look VERY different from photo to photo. I eventually settled on a single photo image to base the illustration on. The buffaloes are meant to mimic the tame cartoon sidekick of a famous Queen City icon - "Pemmican Pete."

From the ground...UP.

This was done on spec a year or so ago while I was still at the 'Post for GroundUp Restorations. It was only used a time or two, unfortunately. The proposal included "stand-alone" logo variations I designed plus the logo used in conjunction with an illustration I did up of the owner's car ('69 Camaro as shown) plus business cards and letterhead. I was going for the old "Monogram-plastic-model-kit-box-cover-art" sort of look...I'd like to think I pulled it off...

More Photoshoppery.

This photo was almost discarded, and then I thought it might be a good candidate for some tweaking...resulting in the SECOND photo image - I attacked it with multiple filters and adjusted the colour balance and contrast until I achieved the desired effect. Somewhat better, I think...!

A quick explanation.

I wish I could say these were MY creations, but no - they're being used as EXAMPLES ONLY of Ed Roth's brilliant counter-culture cartoons. I needed to illustrate the difference between Roth's unconventional style and the kind of Melba-toast artwork that he was attempting to undermine to an acquaintance. The man was a genius. RIP, "Big Daddy." (Ed Roth - 1932-2001)
